“Dad, I told you I didn’t even want to come on this trip. Goth girls don’t want to go to the beach. The sun is my enemy.” She crossed her arms defiantly, glaring at the bright sunlight streaming through the car windows. The idea of sand and surf felt utterly foreign to her dark aesthetic, and she couldn’t shake off the feeling of being dragged into a situation that was so far removed from her interests.
“It’s nice you want to hang out with your stepdaughter,” she continued, her tone softening slightly but still laced with frustration. “But we really don’t have anything in common.” She glanced out the window, watching as palm trees and beach umbrellas whizzed by. The vibrant colors felt overwhelming; she longed for the muted tones of her usual surroundings.
“I’m really busy,” she added, turning back to face him. “I have to make some videos today…” Her voice trailed off as she thought about all the content ideas swirling in her mind—makeup tutorials, fashion hauls, and perhaps a moody vlog about how much she despised sunny days at the beach. Each video was a piece of herself that she wanted to share with her followers, and it felt like a waste of time being here instead.
Her dad sighed, trying to find common ground between them. “I just thought it would be good for us to spend some quality time together,” he said gently. “You know how hard it is for me since your mom… well, since everything changed.” There was an earnestness in his eyes that made her feel a flicker of guilt.
She softened slightly at his words but quickly steeled herself again. “I get that you’re trying,” she replied more quietly now. “But this isn’t really my scene.”
The thought of sitting on a hot beach surrounded by people who seemed so carefree made her skin crawl. She preferred dimly lit rooms filled with music that resonated with her soul—not this bright chaos.
“Can we at least compromise?” he suggested hopefully. “What if we spend just a little time at the beach and then head back? You can film your videos later.”
She considered his proposal for a moment before nodding reluctantly. Maybe there was room for both their worlds if they could find some balance between sun-soaked sand and shadowy corners where creativity thrived.
